1.  Discuss the state of being or linking verb "to be"                                                                                    (see page 46 and page 135 of text and Homework p. 33)
  • The verb "to be" links the subject with its adjective or its "state of being."                             Examples: I am happy.  The house is big. The teachers were proud.
  • The verb "to be" is also an auxiliary verb.  It "helps" other verbs to form the present and past progressive tense.  Examples: The house is being repaired.  The boys were being questioned.
  • The verb "to be" is an irregular verb you must memorize the conjugation of it:  Present tense: I am, He/She/It is, We/They are, You are.  Past tense: I was, He/She/It was, We/They were, You were.
  • The "to be" verb is often used in its contraction form:  I am = I'm, He is = He's, We are = We're, They are = They're, You are = You're.
